Satyapragyan gets 3rd GM norm in style

Odisha International Master Swayangsu Satyapragyan bagged a delightful double by winning the title and securing his third and final Grandmaster norm in the top (Magistrale) category of the 32nd Bratto Chess Festival, which concluded at Bratto in Italy today.

In the nine-round tournament, Air India employee Satyapragyan scored seven points with six wins, two draws and one defeat. En route to the title, he beat three Grandmasters _ Nikita Maiorov (Belarus), Nidjat Mamedov (Azerbaijan), P Magesh Chandran (India) _ and held another GM _ Sinisa Drazic (Serbia) _ to draw.

Victory over compatriot Magesh Chandran in the final round fetched Satyapragyan his final norm. The Bhubaneswar IM had obtained his first GM norm in the Parsvanath GM Tournament at New Delhi in 2006 and the second in the Kolkata Open GM Tournament three years later.

However, Satyapragyan, needs to increase his Fide rating to 2500 to become the first Grandmaster of Odisha. His current rating stands at 2435 and he hopes to gain 25 to 30 rating points from the Bratto tournament.
